World Of Warcraft Is Changing Things To Free, Will The Game Soon Be Free?

For many years you could change your hairstyle, skin colour and anything about your face and head for free in the beloved Blizzard game, World of Warcraft. But there was always a fee for gender change which is about to be removed.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Executive Producer John Hight said that there won’t be a fee for changing gender anymore in the Shadowlands expansion and you can do this in a barbershop for free just like other facial features.

“A long time ago, we had the ability for players to go in – it was actually a paid service – and change their character. Much of that is now in the barbershop in the game, And as we were adding things up in Shadowlands, we realised, ‘Gosh the only way you can change your gender in World of Warcraft is to go through this paid service.’ And we felt like that’s not the right message.” He mentioned and continued.

“Unfortunately we can’t fix that right now but it is our intent with Shadowlands to take that out of being a paid service thing and [put it] in the barbershop. But that’s not something we can easily hotfix – unfortunately, we can’t do that right now. It is something that we’re going to have in Shadowlands itself.”

Pelagos WoW trans Character

Of course, this response was after some speculations about the first trans character in the game who is an NPC in the Shadowlands expansion named Pelagos. This NPC belongs to the Kyrian covenant and you can join this covenant too in future expansion. Pelagos is believed to have a major role in the story of this expansion and he’s an aspirant desperate for his Kyrian wings.

We also noticed a post from Blizzard in the WoW Forum last week including the following content: “Aspirants are able to choose a physical form that represents their true self. Pelagos, who presented as a woman in his mortal life, chose to be a man in the Shadowlands.”

We haven’t heard of any trans characters in the game until now but John Hight says this doesn’t mean that this is the first character.

“WoW is a game that doesn’t try to emphasise sexual relationships so in that regard, we don’t necessarily tell that part of the story other than to hint around it, But we certainly have characters [that have] – or we’ve always thought of characters as having – different gender identities in the game. We don’t try to put a big focus on it and make it a big deal, we just try to make the game feel comfortable, friendly and approachable for everybody in the game, regardless of where they come from.” Hight Said.

“Knowing some of our designers and having conversations with them, I’m sure that was the intent, but we like to keep things subtle.” He responded to the question if there are any other trans characters in the game already this way. But we couldn’t receive any of these character’s names.

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion is going to release this fall and its beta will be open next week.
