Witcher author demands royalties from developer
Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of the “Wiedźmin” series provided the source material for CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher series. Recently Andrzej’s lawyers have sent a letter to CD addressing an issue of the author’s royalties.
To sum up, Andrzej was contracted to his undisclosed amount of royalties. Though, he only received his money for the first Witcher title. According to Andrzej’s lawyers, the fact that he only received an amount for the first title is actually unlawful. In fact, Andrzej is due to 6% of the profits of the rest of the series and it’s DLC. All and all with sales totaling in at least 33 million copies of the series Andrzej is due to 16 million.
However, CD Projekt Red issued a letter back to his lawyer claiming Sapkowski’s attempt at royalties are groundless.
“The company had legitimately and legally acquired copyright to Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski’s work, i.a. insofar as is required for its use in games developed by the company. All liabilities payable by the company in association therewith have been properly discharged,” it said.
“It is the company’s will to maintain good relations with authors of works which have inspired CD Projekt Red’s own creations. Consequently, the Board will go to great lengths to ensure amicable resolution of this dispute; however, any such resolution must be respectful of previously expressed intents of both parties, as well as existing contracts.”
Though, Sapkowski has admitted his business negotiations were dull at best.
“They offered me a percentage of their profits. I said, ‘No, there will be no profit at all — give me all my money right now! The whole amount.’ It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn’t believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn’t,” he said.
Until this is settled we’ll have to see how this plays out. Hopefully, it won’t get too brutal and both sides will come to a settlement. Comment below on what you think of the situation.
