OtherSide Entertainment Partner Up With Tencent To move System Shock Forward

Since the reveal in 2015, it seems that System Shock 3 has been in development hell. Apart from a few teasers and concept art, not a lot has been shown for the game which has left fans nervous. Development seemed to be going steady until publisher Starbreeze filed for “reconstruction” due to the failure of Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

The developers OtherSide left Starbreeze not long after and reports from February suggest that the game fell behind schedule with the team no longer employed at OtherSide. On May 20 OtherSide Entertainment announced on twitter that Tencent would be “taking the System Shock franchise forward”.

Who Is Tencent?

Tencent is a Chinese multinational conglomerate holding company most known for mobile games and partly owning battle royales like Fortnite. It’s explained that working with the company will alleviate some of the pressure from the small studio but, we haven’t heard anything since the announcement so we’re unaware of how much Tencent will be involved with development.

It’s good to see that the game will have more financial backing but after adding microtransactions to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided fans remain sceptical, to say the least. For now, we’ll have to remain hopeful that System Shock 3 doesn’t receive the same treatment. While they may own the rights for the long-awaited sequel NightDive Studios still owns the System Shock IP.

Although Tencent‘s more mobile-focused it’s shifting more towards console titles and has recently bought 20 percent stock of Marvelous. With this, the company hopes to expand out existing franchises such as Daemon X Machina and Story of Seasons and develop games more appealing to western audiences.

What are your thoughts? Do you trust Tencent to steer System Shock 3 in the right direction or are we going to have a microtransaction filled Deus Ex scenario? Let us know in the comments and check out our Youtube channel here!
