Frogwares Announced A New Sherlock Holmes Game Coming To Next-Gen Consoles In 2021
Frogwares has been developing Sherlock Holmes games since 2002’s Mystery of the Mummy. Since then, the Ukraine-based developer has made many titles based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective, including 2014 cult hit Crimes and Punishments. Now, Frogwares has announced a new Sherlock Holmes game coming to current-gen and next-gen consoles in 2021.
Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One will tell the story of a younger Holmes still grappling with his mother’s death. In this prequel to Crimes and Punishments and The Devil’s Daughter, Sherlock returns to his Mediterranean hometown only to discover a deep-rooted conspiracy with ties to him hidden by the town’s supposedly quaint facade. The game will give a more open-ended angle to the standard detective gameplay we’ve come to expect from the series. Set in an open-world environment, players will be tasked with exploring to find clues, talk to people and occasionally partake in a bit of fisticuffs.
Chapter One’s combat has been revamped from Frogware’s previous titles such as The Sinking City, which featured lots of middlingly-received gunplay. Conversely, this new title takes inspiration from other Sherlock media by allowing players to take advantage of Sherlock’s keen deduction skills in hand-to-hand combat.
Like many prequel stories before it, Chapter One’s protagonist will be a younger, “more arrogant” version of the Sherlock we’ve come to know in Frogwares’ previous 2 Sherlock games. In an interview with GameSpot, Frogwares producer Sergey Oganesyan said that this version of Holmes will have “more fun playing with the truth, and he has no problem lying to somebody to get to the bottom of his investigation.” It should be interesting to see a more raw and less-refined version of the iconic character and see the events that mould him into the detective we all know and love.
Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One Trailer
Frogwares shared a trailer for the game which gives us a look at Sherlock’s new (or rather old) look, and you can check that out here:
Anyone else get some Resident Evil vibes from the Holmes manor there?
Anyway, you might have noticed another character accompanying Holmes there. I know what you’re thinking, but that’s not Watson. It’s an older companion of Sherlock’s, also named Jonathan, who presumably we’ll be learning plenty about in this new game.
Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One will release in 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.
