Pokemon Duel gets the boot in The Netherlands
The Netherlands is outlawing Pokemon Duel because of the nation’s new laws on loot boxes. The Netherlands recently banned loot boxes so Pokemon Duel will cease operations. The game will remain playable until January 10, 2019, but will discontinue its use of “Booster Packs” on December 10.
The Netherlands’ rationale behind the prohibition of loot boxes has to do with its definition of gambling. Players earn Booster Packs, and when opened, are awarded random Pokemon, which in turn makes it a form of gambling.
Pokemon Duel originally came out in 2016 for Android and iOS. This move has more to do with legislation than the game’s popularity, so while it’s a bummer for fans in The Netherlands, the move isn’t indicative of any problem from the Pokemon franchise.
