The Falcom classic is making its way to the west
The Ys series has been going strong over the past thirty years, 2017’s Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana was very well received and last years Ys IX: Monstrum Nox has kept the momentum going, in Japan at least. But not for much longer! Last week NIS America announced that the ninth entry in the series will be seeing a western release.
Vanquish the creatures of the night in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox! To escape the city of Balduq, Adol must use his new Monstrum powers to stop the creatures of the Grimwald Nox. Coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2021! Learn more here: (https://t.co/B3tIg3ejuH) #YsIX pic.twitter.com/wdjUXmVdWf

The series has come far since it’s humble beginnings, the earlier titles had Adol running into his enemies head-on to deal damage but the Ys games have grown a lot over the years, adapting to modern sensibilities keeping it fresh while also staying true to the series roots. We last found Adol marooned on the Isle of Seiren overcoming the power of the Lacrimosa, now he falls prey to the prison island of Balduq.
Upon imprisonment, Adol runs into the elusive Aprilis, who unlocks his potential as a Monstrum. An alter ego of sorts that allows him to exorcise monsters and navigate the world, opening up exploration in ways the series failed to meet. Upon meeting Aprilis, Adol encounter other Monstrum each with their own unique abilities to help fight against the Roman empire.
“What is real…is defined by what is not.
Who one is…is defined by who one isn’t.
To move forward, one must accept these truths.
Yes, in this prison—this cradle—
my dreams and reality became one.”
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is set to release sometime during 2021 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. We haven’t got a definite release date yet but be sure to keep up to date with DGR as more info on the game comes out.
