Tetris 99 has added some downloadable content. The content, known as “Big Block” DLC, comes with two new offline game modes: Marathon Mode and Vs CPU Mode.
Marathon Mode is very much in line with traditional, single-player Tetris. It’s just you and the blocks — no mob of competitors vying for position and bragging rights.
Vs CPU Mode is exactly what it sounds like: you against the CPUs. 98 of them, to be precise. This mode serves as a way for people to get the Tetris 99 experience without needing to play online against those pesky humans.
The DLC doesn’t stop there though. Fans can be assured that more modes and themes have been planned for the future. This includes the upcoming Tetris 99 Maximus Cup, which begins on May 17th and runs until May 19th. Players who score 100 points during the event will be rewarded with a retro theme that harkens back to the days of playing Tetris on the venerable Game Boy.
The DLC will cost US$9.99, which begs the question: is it worth it? To be fair, the promise of future content makes the DLC feel more like a mini-season pass. But that still feels a bit expensive for what the player gets today. Two offline modes. One also must consider that this price is in addition to what players already pay for Nintendo’s online service. For the die-hard Tetris fan, this may seem fair. But to the more casual players, this looks like a solid double dip into gamers wallets.
Tetris 99 Big Block DLC is available now for $9.99.
