Bethesda has two massive RPGs in the making for the next generation, Starfield, and Elder Scrolls VI. Yesterday Reddit user BongRippatheSkeptic spotted and reported on a job listing from Zenimax, Bethesda’s parent company. The studio is looking for programmers to assist in its next role-playing title.
The post from Zenimax states that it is searching for gameplay programmers who can advance “the bleeding-edge of RPG development for the PC and consoles.” Features that the new employee would work with would include “player and characters’ behaviors, combat and powers mechanics, user interface, etc.”
The big question hanging is if this is for the sooner to be released sci-fi game or the next installment to Bethesda’s iconic fantasy IP. Since Starfield has been aimed closer and was in development when it was announced in 2018, it sounds like the search for new talent will be for the long-awaited followup to Skyrim. When the director of Bethesda Games Todd Howard spoke about the two projects, he said fans would have to wait a long time before diving back into the world full of dragons and elves. Meanwhile, Starfield should be close to finishing up within the next year or two.
More evidence points to these programmers will work within a universe of fantasy rather than sci-fi comes from another job posting of Zenimax hunting for a video editor. Starfield should be nearing completion, or at least has reached far enough into development for more promotion. One qualification in this listing states one must “have experience capturing compelling video game footage,” meaning this project must have enough done to be playable, unlike Elder Scrolls.
With all that said, it is speculation from both BongRippa and us at DGR. Bethesda has not officially announced anything about either game. Work continues on Fallout 76 with updates and progress to grow that community of wastelanders. As the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 arrive later this year along with E3 this summer, Bethesda will hopefully give the world an update on what’s to come in the future.
