This past generation had Xbox in the lead in terms of power, especially in 2017, with the upgraded Xbox One X. Now an anonymous developer going by the username Kleegamefan on ResetEra claims to have used the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett devkits and is saying how the PS5 is the faster console.

Right now, game performance is better on PS5,” writes the user. “I believe that is probably because PS5 development hardware and software are in a more advanced state. I fully expect Scarlett to close that gap once they ship more mature dev kits and software.

It must be said, since software, not hardware, is a traditional Microsoft area of expertise, it’s very possible that they could ultimately deliver more advanced DirectX development software in the end allowing games to run better on Scarlett even if the hardware is less capable.

Xbox and PlayStation have shifted focus on what’s become important this generation. Microsoft has pushed for service like with Xbox Game Pass. Sony Interactive Entertainment has eyed singleplayer titles like last year’s God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man. With a new generation coming next year, the capabilities of the new hardware will become important for potential buyers.

The leading edge Xbox has had with the One X has been the extra teraflops, meaning how much a processor calculates a trillion floating-point operations per second. PlayStation’s powerful edition features an eight-core x86-64 AMD “Jaguar” CPU with a 4.2 teraflops AMD Radeon-based graphics card, 8GB GDDR5 RAM and 1TB storage. Meanwhile, Microsoft built-in an eight-core CPU, 6 teraflops AMD Polaris architecture, and 12GB GDDR5 RAM. To get to the point, Xbox has a faster CPU and GPU combination.

Both companies are heading for the highest frame rates and resolutions possible. Talk about 8K gaming has been discussed along with playing a game at 4K while running at 60 frames per second. No release dates or prices have been set, but both the PS5 and Project Scarlett will launch winter 2020.

I am a student in California trying to get a degree in journalism. I have aimed to get myself into the world of video game journalism, so I have focused on achieving that with my education and my writing. I have been a lifelong gamer who loves action-adventure titles, shooters, RPGs, and anything with explosions and excitement. Outside of gaming, I am a huge metalhead and movie fanatic. Give me brutal music along with some good comedies, action flicks, and of course, some grade-A horror.

Have your say!
