Hand-Drawn Horror Mundaun Debuts Next Spring

Explore a world between reality and myth in varied and open levels.

Shown off during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, Mundaun looks like a thing of surreal beauty. 

Beware of and banish the diabolical creatures roaming the steep landscape.

After the suspicious death of his grandfather, the protagonist finds themselves in Mundaun, a snowy mountain range a long way from home. While solving intricate puzzles, talking to peculiar locals, and avoiding demonic encounters, the protagonist will fall down a rabbit hole to reveal the circumstances of his grandfather’s death and the mysteries haunting the town.

Mundaun will be the debut title of Swiss developer Hidden Fields, a studio led solely by programmer and illustrator Michel Ziegler who has worked on the game for over five years now. We last saw Mundaun back in 2018 and a trailer dropped not long after Ziegler announced what he was working on over twitter. While Mundaun may look graphically dated, the style serves to make it easier to place assets but, I think this reinforces the visual appeal, giving it a dreamlike quality, reminiscent of The Lighthouse or Return of the Obra Dinn.

Though we can’t fully say what the gameplay will consist of, it somewhat looks to take inspiration from Amnesia. Throughout the game, the protagonist’s sanity will deteriorate as they encounter a variety of horrors. Described as a ‘fear resistance’ factor on the game’s Steam page, it will essentially make the protagonist slower depending on their sanity, operating on a cause and effect basis. Everything seems fairly open, I imagine the gameplay loop will consist of gathering info from the various locals and using that to solve the puzzles dotted about the landscape.
