With the next generation of consoles right around the corner many gamers are skeptical whether to hold out for the newer releases. EA has just confirmed that they will not charge for a next-gen upgrade.
Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 have their own ways of upgrading to the current generation. Many which we do not know the full extent of, but we can expect massive graphic enhancements, quicker load times, and higher frame rates.
The Xbox Series X showcased its latest feature being Smart Delivery. This feature automatically finds games in a players library that can be upgraded to the current generation. This of course is a free service.
Sony has not come out and said if they will be doing something similar to Smart Delivery, but we continue to see console exclusives on their end.
EA CFO Blake Jorgenson said during EA’s earning briefing, “Note that this year the phasing includes the effect of revenue recognition from the games we are launching for the current generation of consoles that can also be upgraded for free for the next generation. We’ve made a preliminary estimate of that impact in the phasing. But it should be noted that this will not affect net bookings for the full year, nor cash flow, just the timing of recognition.”
CD Projekt Red is another studio that will be doing the same with their game Cyberpunk 2077.
This might become a common theme between more and more studios as we get closer to the launch of the next generation.
