In typical cryptic fashion, CD Projekt Red teased the release of new information on their highly-anticipated action RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, yesterday via Twitter. As video game convention Gamescom kicked off this morning in Cologne, Germany, fans waited eagerly for any and all morsels of new content.
Some were disappointed to find only a handful of screenshots released to the general public. While these images are certainly beautiful, they do little to whet the appetites of those hoping for new information regarding story and gameplay, or even a glimpse at the extensive gameplay session that was shown to journalists behind closed doors at E3 in June.
I guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer for something more substantial. The slow drip of information about the game is in line with how CD Projekt Red handled the build-up for the release of The Witcher 3, so this strategy certainly isn’t misaligned with expectations.
For now, fans will surely pick through these screens and parse out new tidbits of information the best they can. They are the best representation of actual gameplay most of the world has seen, so that’s something to be excited about.
Cyberpunk 2077 is yet to get a firm, or even semi-firm release date. But, according to developers, they are shooting for a release on current-gen consoles, meaning PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Here are a few of the screenshots released:
The images depict a gritty, violent future that sets to explore the intersection between technology and humanity. These are themes we’ve seen before in games and movies, and it will be interesting to see how Cyberpunk 2077 incorporates them into a more character-driven narrative. With the pedigree they’ve established throughout the Witcher series, hopes are high.
Stay tuned, as there might still be a few more fireworks to be set off before the end of Gamescom.
