Byleth has been revealed as the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter.
In the online showcase, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai announced Byleth from Fire Emblem (both male and female versions) will be joining the roster as downloadable content on January 28.
Byleth is from the latest entry in the Fire Emblem series: Three Houses, released last year. Byleth’s moveset, strengths and weaknesses are similar to other Fire Emblem characters, the closest similarity looking like Marth and Lucina – using spacing to keep opponents at bay. Where Byleth has weaker mobility, their range is impressive, their special attacks using the four different legendary weapons from Three Houses.
Byleth takes the total number of Fire Emblem characters in Smash Bros. Ultimate up to eight. Another Fire Emblem character is likely to split opinions in the Smash community – fans of the series are sure to appreciate another fighter, while those unfamiliar with the game might be disappionted. Especially if you thought this was the reveal where we finally saw Waluigi.
There were a couple other announcements in the showcase. Two new Amiibos – Dark Samus and Richter – are releasing January 17. Byleth was also the final fighter in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter’s Pass. However, Sakurai announced Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is coming next, adding a further six new characters in the future. Waluigi fans, there’s still hope.
