In 2017 Square Enix let the world know that they were teaming up with Marvel. The plan is to make a new Avengers game according to that announcement, but since then we have heard nothing. We all assumed it would be a story-driven game as that’s S.E’s bread and butter. It feels like we may have been right according to the job listing on the Crystal Dynamics website seen here.
The last line of the description has the following, “develop a high-quality narrative AAA gameplay experience”. Knowing what crystal dynamics did with the tomb raider games, I think we’re in for a treat. One of the Essential Duties & Responsibilities is: “Create an emotional gameplay experience that remains consistent to the game’s creative vision”. A game that is story driven is something we haven’t seen in the AAA market recently. Look at the trailer below that CD shared back in 2017.
After just recently re-watching Endgame, this game will settle the Marvel itch I am going to have when marvel slows down their production schedule. It’s important to notice that they have high expectations for this game as the bottom of the job listing has this bullet point: “Passion for games and ambition to create a Game of the Year title”. Considering we got a trailer for this game two years ago and they are, only now, getting in a Narrative Director. It can be worrying that the game is in ‘development hell’ or it can be reassuring that they aren’t rushing, only time will tell.
