Nintendo allows people who own a Nintendo Switch to save their game data on the cloud, meaning if you lose your Switch or damage it, you can pick up a brand new Switch and continue where you left off. Now, this feature is only available for those who are subscribed to the Nintendo Online Service, now not all games allow cloud backups and it seems Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be one of those games that do not allow cloud backups.
As during an interview with French site Gamekult held with Animal Crossing: New Horizons director Aya Kyogoku and producer Higashi Nogami, you can check out the full interview here.
Director Aya Kyogoku and producer Higashi Nogami went over cloud backups and had this to say on the matter:
New Horizons will not be compatible with cloud backups to avoid manipulating time, which remains one of the founding concepts of the series
This news comes as a complete let down for fans who are looking to pick up the game as if you play the game for the next two years and lose your switch, unfortunately, you will lose your entire save data and will have to start a brand new game.
