The critically acclaimed sci-fi strategy epic is coming to the PS4 in September
The latest game from the developers behind Odin’s Sphere and Dragon’s Crown received new gameplay during day 3 of IGN’s Summer of Gaming event. Vanillaware’s 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim had a Japanese release in November last year to high praise, which is no surprise given their track record. Atlus has announced the game will be releasing on PlayStation 4 on September 8 2020.
Vanillaware games are widely regarded for their expertly crafted narratives and 13 Sentinels is no different. Primarily set during the 1980s the story is split between the thirteen protagonists as they are pulled from their everyday lives into a war against the invading kaiju that ravaged Japan. The art style follows that of previous Vanillaware titles and looks absolutely stunning. The setting moves from various time periods as certain characters’ stories unfold. The settings move from lively city streets to traditional shrines and future ruins. The soft watercolours gives it a dreamy storybook feel, something I particularly liked in Odin’s Sphere: Leifthrasir.

Combat moves in real-time and shifts from side-scrolling exploration to a top-down perspective with tower defence-like elements. Time moves while exploring too so players will have to be quick to find all available dialogue options.
“The concept of doing a time leap story structure with multiple protagonists and all the sci-fi genre bells and whistles has been in my mind for quite a while.” – George Kamitani
