Announced in May 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 has been a devoutly followed title since. It’s still gaining a dedicated following of players before the release of the title. With all the buzz surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, why not take a deep look at the upcoming, Sci-Fi RPG.

World

Cyberpunk 2077 is a neon, open world set within Night City, California in the year 2077. In the not-so-near future crime has swept across Night City, and you’re there to thrive off of it. You take control of V, the lead “protagonist” and are free to explore the 6 districts of the city, taking part in anything from crime to, well probably just crime.

As previously mentioned, there are 6 distinct regions within the city as well along with Badlands, the space outside of Night City, open to exploration. The urban setting lends itself well to the size of the game. Instead of building out to make the world bigger, they could build up. Many of the buildings are full assets, allowing you to interact and explore them, something quite unique in most open world games. The city is pretty diverse, you’ll have to navigate gang-infested Pacifica, as well as the lavish Westbrook

Gameplay

In any RPG there needs some sort of player progression, in Cyberpunk 2077 they’re using the tried and true skill tree. With 11 separate branches including the likes of athletics, shooting, and hacking just to name a few… Some classes in Cyberpunk, specialize in some of those abilities. Hacking is very important for the Netrunner class, while combat skills are important to the Solo. Last but not least is the Techie, a class that uses gadgets and machinery. The ability to customize seems to be an important focus on the game, giving itself some replay-ability.

Cyberpunk 2077 is game about violence and crime, and whats the one main ingredient to both of those things? An arsenal of weapons of course! The game has 3 separate ranged weapon types including, Power weapons, your everyday gun. Tech weapons, they allow you to shoot through walls and enemies. And finally Smart weapons, that have homing bullets. The variety doesn’t stop there, there are 4 damage types, Physical, Thermal, EMP, and Chemical.

Combat

The combat seems to (kind of) fall in the category of a looter shooter. While you do in fact, shoot people for loot there are some key differences. It looks as though GTA and Borderlands had a very eccentrically neon lovechild. Although it’s apparently completely able to play through without killing a single person.

The game features 50-60 hours of gameplay that’s said to be full of impactful decisions. The story revolves around “V”, a character you customize and change through the course of the game. You select the reasoning for “V” being in Night City as well as physical traits like hair, tattoos, and eyes.

Cyberpunk doesn’t lock you into a specific play style like some other games. Almost every situation can be solved in many different ways. The freedom to play the way you want is a welcome change to a lot of bigger titles. Being able to play a game with friends is a need for some gamers. There has been confirmation of an online mode that is launching some time after the initial release.

Are you excited?

I’m personally very excited for Cyberpunk. CD Projekt Red has a lot to live up to in the form of The Witcher 3, but I hope they can. Another open world RPG helmed by an amazing studio sounds very promising.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated games of the decade, I’m very curious to see if it’ll live up to the hype. If you are, share with us your thoughts in the comments below. If you enjoyed the article, why not share it on social media?
