I know what you are thinking, but hear me out! As a massive fan of the Resident Evil series, I am aware that it has an unfortunate track record with live action adaptations. It turns out that putting Milla Jovovich into the picture, did not cure any of the Resident Evil films’ terrible story telling. Even if she was in the fantastic ’90s Sci-Fi “The Fifth Element”. In all honesty, narratives that stray from their original source material rarely end up being fan favourites. But alas there is hope! Over the past few years there have been countless rumours circulating about a Resident Evil TV show, and it has now been confirmed by Deadline.
In the wake of video game related Netflix shows (Castlevania and the upcoming Witcher Series), it is actually not so surprising to see Resident Evil added to the roster. The critically acclaimed game series has a fierce and loyal fanbase. It also has over two decades of story material. With this in mind it is reasonable to see why the hit website has chosen to take it on. Here we are going to tell you everything we currently know about the highly anticipated RE series, and what it holds in store.
In Defence of Netflix
Aside from Resident Evil: Degeneration (and the other animated films), Capcom have struggled with movie representations of the game. If you have by chance ever watched the Dead Rising film, at least you know that the RE ones could have been worse! Despite Netflix being a multi-million corporation that oozes content, they have provided viewers with spectacular shows. Although unrelated to RE, Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black and GLOW are ones I have watched recently that I found to be amazing. The company knows how to make compelling stories! This is one of the sole factors reviving my hope for the production. Netflix does seem to have a midas touch.
What We Know
According to Deadline, the show will aim to explore the Umbrella Corporation. Dark mythologies exist within RE’s narrative, and these will be covered and fleshed out throughout the course of the show. This could potentially lead to us finding out more about characters such as James Marcus, Oswell Spencer and Albert Wesker. This would be extremely interesting as they are still shrouded in quite a veil of mystery. I would personally love to see them cover more backstory from Resident Evil Zero as well! We have yet to find out where the first season will be situated and in what time period. Hopefully it will begin as it should, at the Spencer mansion in the Arklay mountains with Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. It would also work if it started with Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen, as this could then lead onto the events of the first game.
The casting selection is yet to be revealed for the series. The show is being made by Constantin films, who were also the production company for the movie treatments. If another “Alice” situation can be avoided that would be the best outcome. The protagonists should be mainstays from the games, and they wouldn’t be hard to cast! Off the bat, Chris Evans could be Chris Redfield (the Chris legacy!) Come to think of it, a few Marvel characters would fit the role of Jill Valentine, Scarlett Johansson would be one. But it is not a marvel title, so I doubt they would cast them. Although, we did get Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, and he is DC!
The show has been pitched to Constantin Germany, meaning it will be ready to go into production soon. Presently, there are no teasers or clips as it hasn’t started shooting yet. Given that a cast has not yet been revealed, it may even still be in the casting stages. It is speculated that the show will have a late 2020 or early 2021 release date.
Other Considerable Notes:
- It will most likely be live action as Constantin Germany does not produce CGI content.
- The show may possibly act as the introduction for a rebooted film series.
- The following film will not be classed as a Netflix Original.
- Capcom have been wanting to reboot the series for a while.
- The show will incorporate “signature elements” from the games, such as “action sequences and easter eggs”.
