Daily Gaming Report Game of the Year: 2018
2018 has been an incredible year for gaming, from Monster Hunter World way back in January to Red Dead Redemption 2 in November, there have been some absolute classics along the way. We got together as a team to vote for our favourite game from the last 12 months.
The highly impressive independent title came out across all platforms in January and absolutely blew everyone away, sitting comfortably on a score of 94 on Metacritic. Critics praised all aspects of the platformer, including the story, design, gameplay and soundtrack.
Monster Hunter World
Released at the start of the year on Xbox and Playstation before making it’s way to PC in August, Monster Hunter World was a huge success. Currently sitting on a score of 90 on Metacritic, the title maintained the gameplay mechanics that made the series as popular as it was, while upgrading consoles enabled more depth to be added to the open world.
God of War
Another exceptional Playstation exclusive, God of War saw Kratos return 8 years after the last title. A beautiful game played through one continuous camera shot, God of War tells a brilliant story around outstanding combat at acting. Currently sitting on 94 on Metacritic this is not a game you should be missing.
Sony and Spider-Man might not have worked out too well in the past but there’s no need to worry here. Spider-Man captures the essence of the character to perfection with a brilliant story that brilliantly blends the down to earth, relatable struggles of Peter Parker with the over the top comic book super-villain plans. The story coupled with fast paced and addictive gameplay adds up to an outrageously fun experience, with a score of 87 on Metacritic.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Taking a year off to reinvigorate the series worked wonders for Ubisoft, and while Origins was a big success, Odyssey was even better. With a score of 87 of Metacritic, Odyssey drew praise for it’s incredibly gorgeous world, engaging story and enjoyable combat.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Read Dead blew everyone away when it was released in November. It’s expansive world filled with a ridiculous attention to detail, from horse testicles to weather systems, nothing was ignored. Rockstar created a world so engaging you could spend hours fishing, playing poker or hunting without even realising how much time had gone by. When players did get round to the main story they were told a brilliantly engaging and emotional story that left you feeling a genuine attachment to the characters. Currently sat on 97 on Metacritic it’s an unmissable experience.
Winner: God of War
Edging Red Dead by just one vote, God of War is Daily Gaming Report’s 2018 Game of the Year. A truly outstanding game that’s fully deserving of the title, a true masterpiece.
