Daily Gaming Report’s Top 23 games that should receive a remake!

What games deserve to bath in the glory of a remake?

With the recent success of multiple remakes / remasters including Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. It seems more and more remakes are being announced everyday. Interestingly, some upcoming remakes include Medieval, Panzer Dragoon and Command and Conquer… Some real treasures to look forward to!

But, What other classics should receive a remake?.. Well here is a list of just some of the titles that we believe should be remade.

23. Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical turn based role-playing game for the Sony PlayStation 1. The game combines thematic elements of the Final Fantasy video game series with a game engine and battle system unlike those previously seen in the franchise. Final Fantasy Tactics uses a 3D, isometric, rotatable playing field, with a large number of ‘sprite’ characters to choose from.

Final Fantasy Tactics

FF Tactics brought a new concept to the Final Fantasy world and with it a great story. It would be great to see a remake of this title hit the shelves today. If you haven’t played the game before be sure to check out the original trailer below.

22. Goldeneye (64)

After seeing the fan made project ‘GoldenEye 25’ I can’t help but think GoldenEye 64 as a remake, would be amazing. This fan made trailer shows the single-player campaign from the legendary N64 shooter GoldenEye 007 in Unreal Engine 4.

If you don’t already know, GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Rare and based on the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye (obviously). It was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console in August 1997. The game features a single-player campaign in which players assume the role of James Bond to prevent a global financial meltdown… And, although the single player was great, it was the split-screen multiplayer mode that really made the game shine…

Retrospectively, GoldenEye 007 is considered an important game in the history of first-person shooters and is named by some as one of the greatest video games of all time. Surely a nice remake for GoldenEye then would make sense.. Possibly with online multiplayer?

21. Destruction Derby

Destruction Derby is a vehicular combat racing game based on the sport of.. You guessed it, demolition derby. The game tasks the player with racing and destroying cars to score points. I’m sure many games have a similar concept… In fact, the game has received a spiritual successor by the name of Wreckfest. You can check out the trailer for this game here. The success of this title just screams… Where have you been Destruction Derby!! Check out some of the original PS1 gameplay below:

20. Hogs of War

Hogs of War is a 3D turn-based strategy game very similar to Worms 3D. Though, i’d actually go as far as saying this game could be even better than Worms 3D.

The game was released for the PlayStation on 6 June 2000 and set in the ‘First World War-era’ where pigs engage in combat. Hogs of War boasted a single-player career mode, and offline multiplayer featuring voice acting by British comedian Rik Mayall.

Unfortunately Hogs of War never received a sequel despite a fairly big cult following. If it was to receive a remake i’m sure it would be received with open arms.

19. Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy 6 is one of the greatest Final Fantasy games (possibly thee greatest) however, gets overlooked due to later 3D releases (7, 8 and 9 mainly). The game’s story follows an expanding cast that includes fourteen playable characters. The story includes and extends past depicting a rebellion against an evil military dictatorship, pursuit of a magical arms-race, use of chemical weapons in warfare, depiction of violent, apocalyptic confrontations with Divinities, several personal redemption arcs, teenage pregnancy, and the continuous renewal of hope and life itself…

Lots of content to cover and it all adds up to make a thrilling story mixed with the original Final Fantasy RPG style of gameplay. Seeing this game remade in a beautifully crafted 3D environment would be a dream come true.

FF6 Map

In fact, When Final Fantasy VI was released it received amazing reviews and is seen as a landmark title for the role-playing genre; for instance, it was ranked as the 2nd best RPG of all time by IGN in 2017.’ On top of this, Final Fantasy VI has won numerous other awards and is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all time. If you are interested in the title or have never played it before check out the introduction to the game below:

18. Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve is an action role-playing game for the PS1. ‘The story follows New York City police officer Aya Brea over a six-day span in 1997 as she attempts to stop ‘the Eve’, a woman who plans to destroy the human race through spontaneous human combustion… Players explore levels set in areas of New York while utilizing a pausable real-time combat system along with several role-playing game elements.’

Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve was SquareSoft’s first 18 rated game, it received top reviews; critics praised the graphics, gameplay, storyline and the soundtrack. Seeing the title remade in a similar way to Resident evil 2 would shed a new light on the franchise and I believe it could be something spectacular. Check out the some gameplay below:

17. Jet Set Radio

Jet Set Radio is a much loved title published by Sega for the Dreamcast in the year 2000. With great reviews, a massive following and a great soundtrack why hasn’t Jet Set Radio received a proper remake yet?… Maybe there is one to come?

Jet Set Radio

In the game, ‘The player controls one of a gang of youths who skate the streets of a fictionalized Tokyo on inline skates, spraying graffiti and evading the authorities. It was one of the first games to use cel-shaded visuals, giving it a cartoon-like appearance.’ Check out some gameplay below… Tony Hawk eat your heart out.

Ps. even if your not interested in this one definitely check out the awesome soundtrack!

16. Fighting Force

Fighting Force is a 1997 3D beat ’em up. Players take control of one of four characters as they move through urban and science fiction environments while battling waves of oncoming enemies. Weapons included soda cans, knives, cars, and guns.

With a second player on the scene this game was great fun.. I can’t help but think we need a remake of this game.. Not just because the game is great but simply because we don’t see many games like it anymore. Check out some gameplay below:

15. Marvel Ultimate Alliance

With Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 just around the corner I can’t help but want to play the original… Now, The original is a great game but does suffer with age, things like choppy graphics and outdated visuals really pull the game down however, all of this could be fixed in a remake or remaster of the original.

The game itself features many of the superheroes, supervillains, and supporting characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics. 1-4 Players can select teams of four from a range of more than twenty-two unique playable characters!

‘The game begins with Dr. Doom and the Masters of Evil launching an attack on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier U.N.N. Alpha. Nick Fury sends out a distress call to all available superheroes for assistance.’ Check out the original trailer below:

14. Driver

Do you remember a game where you could drive around San Francisco in a fully 3D environment.. A game that had a number of terrifyingly hard missions and a perilous tutorial level… Still not sure? Well, if you never played it, meet ‘Driver’.

Driver is an action driving video game similar to the likes of GTA (however it came before the 3D GTA games we all know and love) It was released on 25 June 1999; and was the first (and best) game in the Driver series. Driver 1 (and 2 i’m sure) have a great number of fans and offered some unique gameplay. I’m sure if this title was remastered with the difficulty and free roam features of the original, then we could have something good. Check out the introduction to the original game below!

13. Golden Sun

Golden Sun is an excellent role-playing game released on the Game Boy Advance. The story follows a team of magical “Adepts” whose purpose, as it is revealed early on, is to protect the world from alchemy, a potentially destructive power that was sealed away long ago.

Golden Sun

During their quest, the Adepts gain new abilities (called Psynergy). There powers along with powerful assets known as Djinn are used to solve puzzles and battle powerful enemies. The 2nd game in the series called ‘The Lost Age’, takes place immediately after the events of the first game but focuses on the perspectives of the antagonists. The two games, put together, form one amazing story.

In fact, I’d go as far as saying Golden Sun could arguably be one of the best Japanese RPGs created for any console… With this in mind it baffles me to see that Golden Sun has never had a console release. Now, with the Switch’s success it would be a perfect time to remake this glorious gameboy advance game. Check out the ‘Virtual Shop’s’ trailer for Golden Sun below. If you have never played this game do be sure to check it out!

12. Power Stone

Power Stone is a 3D arena fighting game made by Capcom and was originally released on the Sega NAOMI hardware. Interestingly it was later ported to the Dreamcast In October 2006 where I personally discovered this gem.

To this day Power Stone remains my favourite fighting game. It isn’t very often a game like this arises and when one does they tend not to be very good. In fact, it was so good on release that an anime TV series based on the game ran in 1999 from April 3 to September 25 and featured all ten characters from the game.

‘Gameplay involves selecting a character and then proceeding to battle the other characters, one at a time, in various locales. The three-dimensional fighting includes the ability to use special attacks as well as to pick up and fight with such objects as tables, chairs, rocks and bombs. During battle, “Power Stones”, resembling gems of different colors, appear in the arena.

If a character collects three Power Stones, he/she transforms into a more powerful version of himself/herself. He/she will then be able to use one of two super special attacks: generally a massive long-range power attack and a grab or close-range move. The powered-up mode only lasts until the power bar is fully drained, during which the special attack can be executed (which completely depletes the power bar) or other, lesser special moves can be executed (which only use a small portion of power). Each match continues until the life bar of one of the two characters fighting is depleted.’

The game was re-released on the PSP however has never seen a remake or later console release. This is something I have been waiting for for some time.. Come on Sega make it happen!

11. Advance Wars

If you ever owned a Game Boy Advance you have probably heard of Advance Wars. Advance Wars is a turn-based tactics game with a modern war setting. In each game ‘two to four armies, each headed by a commanding officer, take turns building and commanding units on grid-based maps, while attacking enemy units, moving positions, holding ground, or capturing enemy/neutral properties (cities, ports, airports, bases, or HQ).’

The objective is to defeat the enemy army. However, there are two ways to defeat an opponent: destroy every one of the opponent’s units on the map or capture the opponent’s headquarters.

Advance Wars

Upon release, Advance Wars received massive praise. IGN gave the title a 9.9/10. Now, it has been over a decade since the last Advance Wars game. I’d like to think the Nintendo Switch would be the perfect console for an Advance Wars remake. Now it is on you Nintendo! If you haven’t played the game before check out the trailer below!

Before I finish talking about Advance Wars I do believe a fairly new spiritual successor to the game does deserve a mention… Wargroove. You can check out the official Wargroove website here!

10. Sonic Adventure

Sonic Adventure is the first main Sonic the Hedgehog game to feature proper 3D gameplay. The story follows Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Big the Cat, and E-102 Gamma in their quests to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds and stop Doctor Robotnik from unleashing Chaos.

Sonic Adventure

With 6 Characters to choose from, each offering a different story with unique levels, great gameplay, a stunning soundtrack and a compelling story. Not to mention the mini games like racing and interacting with Chao (basically a virtual pet). It is no surprise the game received critical acclaim and over 2.5 million sales… Despite the games many bugs reviewers lauded the game’s visuals and gameplay, calling it a major technological advancement.

Sonic Adventure was an important release and is called by some the best sonic game to date… With masses demanding a Sonic Adventure 3 why not head the fans call? Make a number 3… or at least a good remake… No one wants another terrible port (or DX) Sega!

9. Timesplitters

If I had to choose which Timesplitters to remake i’d pick number 2… but hopefully I won’t have to… The effort to remake and re-release the best of the classic TimeSplitter trilogy has now been going on for five whole years by the name of ‘Timesplitters Rewind’. Interestingly, this is a fan made project and is still slowly progressing. However, I can’t help but think Crytek (the current owners of the Timesplitters IP) could do more to help with the matter. Check out the teaser trailer released almost 2 years ago..

For those who haven’t experienced Timesplitters, it is a series of first-person shooter games. The games are often compared to the Nintendo 64’s GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark (both of which are great in their own right) As the title suggests, each game features a time travelling element which enables players to battle in a temporal war in a diverse number of locations set over the span of several centuries. This allows for a number a different characters, enemies, level designs… You name it and Timesplitters probably has it… One of the things I can name other than a great single player campaign is an amazing multiplayer experience, why would you want a remake or HD compilation of these gems? Check out this co-op speedrun by Games done quick this year below… It’s pretty amazing.

8. Syphon Filter

Syphon Filter is a third-person shooter action game series published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It has previously appeared on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable game systems.

Syphon Filter

The game itself is very similar to metal gear solid. In fact, it is only the action orientated gameplay that sets Syphon Filter apart. Being compared to one of the most iconic video games in history does tell you something.. Syphon Filter may not be as well know or even as good as Metal Gear Solid however doesn’t make it a bad game. I’d go as far as saying it is one of the best playstation games of its type.

Interestingly in 2017 Sony trademarked Syphon Filter and rumours have been floating around in regards to a remake. Currently nothing is set in stone but I for one hope this game gets a revival! Check out some original gameplay below.

7. SSX Tricky

SSX Tricky is a snowboarding game, the best in the SSX series the and the second game in the series in fact. The game includes a number of ‘remixed’ tracks from the previous games and two new tracks, Garibaldi and Alaska. The important new feature added to the series are the Uber moves. You can check out the original trailer below.

Interestingly, a lot of people have been comparing the fairly new title ‘Steep’ to SSX Tricky however It just doesn’t have the creativeness that Tricky had. SSX Tricky had ridiculous detail put on all of the levels and characters. Steep just seems like a bland/average snowboarding game with nothing to really make it stand out.

A remake of SSX Trick would without a doubt make ‘Steep’ a thing of the past.

6. Crimson Skies

One game springs to mind when air pirates, the best action arcade flight game or plane customization is mentioned… Crimson Skies. The game is set in an alternate history of the 1930s. The US is divided and well.. in short you play an air pirate in the middle of a pirate war with other pirate factions. I won’t ruin the plot for you too much…

Now, There is a reason this game is on the list other than the fact it is without a doubt one of the best action arcade flight games… There are simply no other games out there like this one. It would be a real shame to never see Crimson Skies on the shelves again.

5. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Resident Evil 1 had a remaster, Resident Evil 2 had a remake… Next then should be Resident Evil 3 right? In my opinion Resi 3 is one of the best of the series and definitely deserves a remake… O to be chased by Nemesis once again!

Capcom have recently stated a Resi 3 remake would depend on the fans enthusiasm. Well, from what I have seen fans couldn’t be any more enthusiastic. It may be a few years yet but I think we might see a Resi 3 remake come to light.

Resident Evil 3

For those who don’t already know, Resi 3 was ‘originally planned as a spin-off featuring a different protagonist, Resident Evil 3 was designed to have more action-oriented gameplay than previous Resident Evil games. It features a larger number of enemies and introduces the Nemesis creature, which periodically pursues the player.’ STAAAARRRRSSS!.. Resident Evil 3 received very good reviews and sold more than three million copies worldwide, I can’t wait for the remake! You can check out the first 15 minutes of the original game below.

4. Grand Theft Auto

It seems everyone wants some kind of remake when GTA is mentioned. Some want a San Andreas remake, some would like to see GTA 1, London and 2 remade… Personally, I would like to see Vice City receive a remake. With a brand new paint job, a bigger map, online play and more content Vice City could be even better than it is now!

3. Bully (Canis Canem Edit)

Another Rockstar legend ‘Bully’, the school time GTA. Set within the fictional town of Bullworth, the story follows a student and his efforts to rise through the ranks of the school system. With a unique concept and a great development team Bully sold over 1.5 million copies despite initial controversy for its expected violence and homosexual content.

Rumour has it, a remake of Bully could already be in the works so prepare to enter Bullworth Academy once again. Of course in the meantime you could always play the original game and if you haven’t already played it, check out the original trailer below!

2. Shenmue

After seeing the screenshots of the cancelled Shenmue remaster I can’t help but think Shenmue 1 and 2 deserve a fully fledged remaster. Shenmue is one of the most iconic video games ever made with a great story, an open world and mind blowing visuals (for the time). Taking everything good from the original games and remaking the games from the ground up would be something the thousands of fans i’m sure would appreciate and buy into.

I for one would love a remaster of Shenmue… Check out the introduction to Shenmue below if you haven’t already. If you would like to take a look at some of the screenshots from the Shenmue remaster check out our article here.

1. The Elder Scrolls 3 – Morrowind

With god knows how many Skyrim releases / remasters out there now you’d think that morrowind would receive similar treatment.

Morrowind, to some is the best of the series, in my opinion i’d probably say 2nd best however we can all agree it is better than Bethesda’s latest release…

So why won’t Bethesda remake or remaster Morrowind?! Come on Bethesda… Gives the fans what they want! And no… we do not want a plastic bag.

For anyone who hasn’t experienced Morrowind but enjoys the likes of Oblivion or Skyrim you are indeed missing out… Check out the original trailer below.

Special Mention – Star Wars Games

With rumours floating around that Disney may take away EA’s Star Wars License remakes of original Star Wars games may be announced in the near future.. It isn’t a lie to say Electronic Arts has handled the Star Wars license very poorly.

Should the license ever be acquired by another then we might just see the likes of KOTOR, Rogue Squadron, Shadow of the Empire, Jedi Academy / Outcast remade one day. Of course this is all just speculation but wouldn’t you like to see Some original Star Wars titles remade? How about Empire at War?.. Let us know in the comments below what games you would like to see a remake of and why. If you liked the article be sure to share it with your friends!
